Bridging Art Cultures:

Visiting Graduate Students

from Ewha University, South Korea

The Department of Art Education was excited to host a group of art educators from South Korea between January 6 and January 17 for an educational and cultural program centered at FSU and around north Florida. Led by Professor Young Row of our sister program at Ewha University in Seoul, and facilitated as well by FSU doctoral student YoonJung Kang, the Korean contingent also consisted of art teachers and graduate art education majors at Ewha: JeeSoo Kim, Inkyung Min, Soomee Kwon, and Jiyeon Kim. Tom Anderson served as host and organized the north Florida events with the invaluable assistance of graduate students, Marisa Agama and Jackie Juaristi.

Our guests got the chance to visit local school art programs thanks to cooperating teachers Debrah Barrett Hayes at FSUS and Leslie Anderson at Canopy Oaks Elementary School. They sat in on the graduate Art for Life class taught by Tom Anderson and the graduate Theory and Practice I class taught by Jeff Broome. They also visited the Museum of Florida History, The Master Craftsman Program studio where they got an excellent tour from Sarah Coakley, the Twenty-Second Floor Art Gallery at the Capitol Building, the FAMU Black Archives and the Riley House, a local African American history museum. Viki Wylder, at the FSU Art Museum, gave them a tour of the museum and insights into educational programs run through the museum. Cultural events also included a visit to Wakulla Springs where everyone was greatly impressed by the manatees and alligators, and a trip to St George Island and Apalachicola (where from the reports we received shopping was excellent). A last night dinner at Cabo’s provided the opportunity for Chairman Dave Gussak to present our guests with official certificates of participation.

A highlight of the visit was the International Invitational Art Exhibition held at the 621 Gallery (thanks to Cynthia Hollis and her excellent crew), in which Korean and American art educators showed their work together and had the opportunity to share their insights about art and education with each other. The day also included a workshop organized and conducted by Brianna Akers and a visit to the Sharing Tree, a recycling and re-use facility for teachers and others in Railroad Square.

Professor Row reports that the visit was highly successful. We are planning more such cultural/education events for the future.
