The Ewha GSTI doctoral degree program was authorized by the Ministry of Education in 2004 and established in 2005 with the goal of cultivating teachers and experts through intensive translation and interpretation theory studies and a theoretical approach to translation and interpretation practice. This approach is designed to facilitate translation and interpretation work and develop efficient teaching methods in this era of internationalization. Furthermore, the mission of the program was to help international exchange and contribute to the development of translation and interpretation theory.

Despite its relatively short history, the Ewha GSTI doctoral program has developed into an educational course for producing professionals based on a specialized curriculum different from that of other schools and aligned with international academic research trends. Its goal is to contribute to a variety of fields such as interdisciplinary research, international exchange, translation and interpretation studies and their application to secondary school teaching.

Translation and interpretation studies require research on translators and interpreters as well as linguistic theories. Accordingly, the doctoral program allows its students to take courses at other domestic and foreign schools as well as Ewha, and these courses cover linguistics (including pragmatics), foreign language teaching, history (on cultural exchange and translation), rhetoric, anthroposophy and automatic processing tools, which is useful for interdisciplinary research. In order to boost international exchange between different languages, the program invites teachers from abroad and has them facilitate intensive workshop courses. Ewha has already successfully arranged several special lectures and workshops offered by domestic and foreign researchers and experts.

The major research languages are Korean-English, Korean-French, Korean-Japanese, Korea-Chinese, and other languages. The faculty consists of Ewha GSTI faculty, experts in graduate schools of translation and interpretation abroad, as well as in relevant knowledge. The doctoral degree program allows students to earn credits for courses offered by other graduate schools on the Ewha campus under the guidance of a faculty advisor.

Exchange programs are also available, which share students, faculty, and academic resources with prominent graduate schools of translation and interpretation. The doctoral program also invites specialists from abroad to offer semester-long intensive courses. GSTI students who complete a Joint Certification Program in Interpretation and Translation with the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in the US are awarded with credits in the doctoral degree program. Professor Jacolyn Harmer of MIIS and Professor Hannelore Lee-Jahnke of the University of Geneva implemented certification programs for GSTI students. The Ewha GSTI doctoral program features open and diverse courses on specific subjects and intensive classes, along with active academic exchange with international institutions.
