[Seminar] IS681 Special Lecture Topics on the EU Summary

“Our Values Are Our Interests”
On March 25, 2026, the Graduate School of International Studies at Ewha Womans
University was pleased to welcome the Representative Ambassador of the European Union
to Korea, Mr. Ugo Astuto.
During his special lecture, Ambassador Astuto introduced the European Union offering
students valuable insights into key areas such as defense, security, and free trade
agreements (FTAs). He emphasized the EU’s constant commitment to promoting its core
values namely democracy, respect for international law, individual freedoms, and human
rights.
At a time marked by growing instability and conflict worldwide, Ambassador Astuto
underscored the pursuit of a just and durable peace that does not give rise to future wars.
Students were also given an overview of the trade agreements the EU is currently pursuing,
with particular attention to Australia and the East Asian region, including cooperation with
members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Additionally, the lecture highlighted the EU’s work
in advancing global infrastructure initiatives, ranging from fiscal to digital development.
The special lecture concluded with an engaging Q&A session, during which students
explored current topics such as security challenges and career paths in diplomacy.
